DIY Internal Windows - Aluminium Sliding System

This is one of the options for the DIY sliding system.
This solution is obsolete and I later replaced it with a wooden track (see end of article) but I still keep it here just as one of the possibilities, if only for comparison.




To make your window easier to open, you have to place it on some kind support - best of all - a sliding one.
Here is a step-by-step instruction how to make it.

This aluminium track cost $79 in Bunnings:

It's a "reversed" TRIUMPH sliding door track system as seen here

 You simple turn it around and don't hang the wheels but make a "cradle" on top of them. Below you will find detailed instructions.



The only other problem to sort is to stop the window from falling but this is easy if you already have roller blinds. If so, roll it down a bit so it covers enough of your window sheet to stop it from falling:

It will hold it nicely.

You will need to adjust the little wheels that come with it:

There are 2 of those.








You need to make a "cradle" of the metal top.
Take it apart and get rid of the plastic on the metal top. You won't need that.

Work with the top metal part.

Use a vise to bend it....

... into a cradle like this ...

... and then like this

Make one side shorter (cut it) so that it's not scratching the wall/window and wrap the metal top with Floor Protector self-sticking mat. You can get it in Bunnings for about $10 and cut to size.

Then your "cradle" will look similar to this

Run a few rubber bands around the protector so that the window doesn't slide on its top and only in the track.
Slide it in the track

Screw the whole thing in the wall

You've just got yourself a decent sliding system that will support your window pane. Only one side of the window goes on the slider. The other one can stay closed at all time.




Honesty, I found this solution OK and practical enough but not aesthetic enough. I later replaced it with this one.....
