Bathroom Ceiling with 3 +1 Light Unit - Step by Step

Bathroom ceiling before and after
Bathroom ceilings are relatively simple and can be done an average handyman. Here is an example of a ceiling made in a small bathroom of a unit.
It was done in 3 stages: About 3/4 of it was done first, then "3 in 1" light unit (light + fan + heater) was installed, and finally the ceiling was closed and finished. It had to be done BEFORE the shower screen was installed (because with it maneuvering would be very restrained).

Here is the original bathroom (the demolition has just started with the floor)

The old ceiling was pulled down (as the last thing actually - after the demolition of the rest)

Then the big job of tiling had to be done
Bathroom walls being tiled

Bathroom being tiled

The exhaust pipe for the fan was prepared and hung on the upper concrete ceiling. I had to decide about what would be the exact hight of the ceiling. At this stage take into the account the actual hight of the appliance to be installed there (you can drill the tiles only once).

Wooden frame was screwed to the tiles and strengthened with L shaped metal angle brackets

until it looked like this.

A few remarks here. The tiles needed to be drilled, then filed with plastic plugs and wood was then screwed to the tile. One needs to get a special drilling bit for tiles. This first seems like a difficult job but the trick is to scratch the tile surface (to slightly destroy the smooth surface of the tile; I found the Dremel bits good for this), then drill with the special drilling bit on slow revolutions or with a normal battery hand drill)

The frame on the wall then looks as follows

After the frame is fixed to the walls, the gyprock ceiling can be both glued and screwed to it.

As mentioned before, the ceiling was only covered to about 3/4rd of the area so that the "3 in 1" light could be installed. The exhaust pipe was already in its place.

Here is what the ceiling looked like from its upper side

At this stage I realised that the "ground" connection was missing in the ceiling. It had to be run from the bathroom socket: drill to the other side of the wall, there groove up to the ceiling and then drilled back to the bathroom ceiling; if cound earlier, it could have been done under the tiles in the bathroom wall)

This much space was left for light installation

After the 3 in 1 light together with the fan duct was installed (more on that HERE) ... by the way the electrician had to come at this stage and connect it ...

... the rest of the ceiling could be completed and so the ceiling finally closed.

Now you need to make look it well

Ceiling being smoothed out

Gaps are filled and smoothed (paint shops will advise you on what to buy for this job)

Holes for two smaller lights

And then the whole thing is primed first with a sealer paint

and then painted with at least 2 layers of water resistant paint used for bathrooms (each paint shop will tell you)

Here a finished ceiling can be seen with unfinished toilet and vanity (these were the next jobs)
